Author Zora Neale Hurston uses the setting in the novel in order to give the reader a better perspective of the way the characters live. The setting in this novel begins with a family in a small town next to the “Big Creek”. The people that live on that side of the creek don’t have the opportunity to go to school. They spend their time harvesting cotton and worrying if they have sufficient food to provide their family. These people are not really ranked in society and are often looked down upon. The novel then progresses to Notasulga, which is on the other side of the creek.
