Change
Change occurs to everyone during their lives no matter who they are or where they live. In the book Maestro by Peter Goldsworthy the idea of change is presented throughout the novel. All the characters in the book change in some way or another whether it is physical or something else but there are many characters and relationships whose changes are very evident and have a big impact on their lives. It is these changes that will be discussed in the following paragraphs. Change is very evident in Paul’s life all the way through the novel. At the start of the book he is very intimidated “I soon learnt to avoid the bike shed and the schoolyard as much as possible, to maintain the most minimal profile” by the ‘cool’ boys or ‘bullies’ of the school. Then he is bashed by one of them “Jimmy Papas, a school tough in the class ahead of me, was waiting in the bike shed after school that night”. Things in Paul’s life begin to change when he meets Rosie and appears to get some self-confidence and then when he is accepted into the band ‘rough stuff ‘with the boys he feared in the past “a miracle was occurring. In the span of one luchtime, music, the universal common language, would come to provide me with permanent protection in the schoolyard, and a safe conduct pass into even the darkest corners of the covered area”.
