During the progressive era reforms were either political or social. It was discovered by most social reformers however that make social reforms political reforms must also be made. The people that wanted to make these reforms occur are called muckrakers. One very famous muckraker was Upton Sinclair, who wrote The Jungle, a novel exposing unsafe, disgusting, nauseating aspects of fertilizer and meat-packing factories. Meatpacking or meat-processing is the wholesale business of buying and slaughtering animals, then processing and distributing their carcasses to retailers.
