The period of Reconstruction, which took place from 1865 to 1877 was a period of rebuilding following the American Civil War. During this period of reconstruction, re-growth and rebuilding, Reconstruction governments tried to secure new rights that would grant blacks and former slaves liberties; re-build the nation, physically and economically; and secure equality. However, Reconstructionist attempts to create equality failed as a result of rising groups such as the Ku Klux Klan, the Radical Republicans, a bitter conflict on who would be responsible for Reconstruction, as well as many other problems.
