Sports Related Head Injuries Since school sports season is here I thought I should write about sports related head injuries. Also since October is National Brain Injury Awareness Month, I thought it would be appropriate. Most sports related head injuries result in brain damage. I read that each year there are about 2 million people that get head injuries. Most of these people require hospitalization. Most head injuries are mild and the symptoms usually will disappear over time. Some symptoms are: shortened attention span, motor, perceptual, speech, and language deficits. Other symptoms include social difficulties, sleep difficulty, and personality changes. Some people think that in order to have a concussion you have to be unconscious.
