old man and the sea literary anlysis
In the novel The Old Man and the Sea, Ernest Hemingway portrays strength, courage, and the will to live. Santiago, demonstrated all of this. Though Santiago has many struggles throughout his journey, in the end he was defeated but not destroyed. Santiago has many struggles throughout the book, and most of them lead up to his defeat. His main struggle is killing the marlin. For example, the marlin was strong and stubborn. He took so long to start circling that “the sun was rising for the third time since [Santiago] had put to sea when the fish started to circle” (86). Santiago said to the marlin, when it would not come to the surface, “I love you very much. But I will kill you before the day ends”(54). When the sharks attacked the fish, Santiago had to kill the sharks to defend what he had left of the marlin.
