Journal Entry #1: Week 2, Question 2 Question: “Does having personal problems disqualify one from the role of helper?” Depending on one’s ability to separate their personal life from their professional life determines their capability of being a good a helper. It is important to have this skill as a helper because it enhances one’s ability to take on such a role. Those in need of help, who from this point on will be referred to as “clients”, require that the helper show genuine interest and empathy towards them. If such qualities are apparent in a helper, the more motivated a client will be to seek help from that person. However, if a helper seems preoccupied or uninterested, then the client will most likely feel that they are either being neglected or are not being taken seriously.
