First law of Geography… “ Everything is related to everything else, but ear things are more related than are distant things.” Geography is often referred to as the ‘spatial science’. The wide variety of topics that are addressed by geographers, however, are united by similar questions and a common set of concepts. These questions and concepts are largely spatial in focus and are not unique to economic geography, but are common to the geographic discipline. The word ‘spatial’ carries the idea of the way things are distributed, the way movement occurs, and the way processes operate at the earth’s surface (Getis et al, 2000). The ‘first law of geography’, for example, suggests that everything is related to everything else, but near things are more related than are distant things. It is these types of economic relationships that are of particular interest to economic geographers. There are 6 Basic Characteristics of the “world political economy” I. Single world market -- Market competition -- increasing production is partly achieved through geographic setting. II. State system there is a territorial division between states creating trade boundaries restrictions and tariffs. -- Friction of geography III. Three geographic tiers -- Core, periphery, semi-periphery dependence and interrelationships IV. Temporal patterns -- There exists a cyclical pattern of growth and stagnation. V. Incorporation, subordination and resistance -- Different parts of the world react differently to the world economy -- Local systems are capable of resisting or accepting outside influence VI.
