Northern and Middle Colonies There were many reasons why the British started to colonize the new world, mostly to avoid religious persecution. Settlement started off in the north east parts of the North America in places such as Plymouth and Massachusetts. Soon enough these successful colonies spread to colonize other parts of the new world. Of the major colonies the North and Middle colonies held the most differences. The creators of the north colonies wanted to have religious freedom from the Anglican Church. So they created colonies to avoid religious persecution from the crown. Puritans believed that the north would be a utopia “mansion on a hill”. They would set the stage for other colonies to copy there government. Everybody was supposed to be treated on lifestyle based on relative equality. It was the divine mission, colony for god himself. It was a place where they believed in Grace, were all humans were sinful and could only be forgiven by god. The middle colonies had other motives for colonizing different parts of the new world. They wanted to escape from the strict rule of the Puritans in New England.
