The Glass Ceiling The glass ceiling in the corporate world can be explained as artificial barriers that deny women and minorities the opportunity to advance within their careers. For such a technologically advanced nation, North America still has not surpassed the discriminatory views of earlier years. There are nearly 60 million working women in America, more than 45 percent of the North American work force. Women and minorities are two-thirds of the population, two-thirds of consumers and 57 percent of the work force (Redwood 1). Figure 1.1 shows the percentage of the workforce which is female, and that which is male. It also divides the percentage of workers from different ethnic backgrounds. Considering these statistics, women should be dominating corporate America, but they’re not. “Women and minorities seem to have the greatest opportunity for advancement in industries where change like deregulation and restructuring is occurring” (1). Though women are moving up the corporate ladder, there is still a long way to go.
