Through descriptive imagery of Robin and his surroundings, the obstacle filled search for his kinsman and a final harsh realization of the experience. Hawthorne makes his epiphany well known to both Robin and his readers. Hawthorne begins his literal journey with his description of Robin and Robin’s visual environment. The passage commences in a night journey with Robin, the young protagonist who is describe as a country lad who appeared to be a virgin of town life. The boy seemed to have been well taken care of before the undertaking of his expedition as ``He was clad in a coarse grey coat, well worn but in excellent repair``. His knitted stocking by a mother or a sister was made with care. His hat was given to him from his father. This gives the reader the impression that Robin has just left home for the first time. The journey seems to have appeal to Robin enters the town with ``as light a step`` and with a ``eager eye``. These positive characteristics are here too show the reader of Robins youthful temperament which is a cause of the naivety that he possesses, his youthful side is shown again when he enter the town and ``scrutinizes`` the ``small and mean`` Shacks in the town, could not house his kinsman and no house he sees is worthy of this great man he is searching for. Robin’s feeling that this place is not fit for his kinsman is only fuelled from his great expectation of the journey he is about to under take. The night journey is used literally and symbolically. Symbolically it means, the passage of the unknown and unexpected and his inability to see the whole picture.
