Carl Rogers presents two concepts that we battle with every day. Self-actualization and self-concept. Self-actualization, according to Rogers, is the innate tendency toward growth that motives all people to seek the full realization of their own potential. In human terms, we are motivated to do better because we have faith in ourselves that we can. The very thing that drives us to even attend college. Self-concept is the way that one thinks about oneself. Two very simple concepts that we struggle with everyday, directly or indirectly. Some use up their life time to reach self-actualization, most never do. The single most reason is because they are too preoccupied with overachieving that they almost continuously feel the sense of failure. We need not to overwhelm ourselves with such concepts. We need to feel more comfortable with failure. I’ve learned that failure is the key to success. A good example that made me believe more in that concept was in my high school English class. The assignment was to write a college essay.
