Gods and Generals
Gods and Generals was a masterful portrayal of the first three years of the American Civil War. It chronicled the achievements of Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson and General Robert E. Lee for the South. Another main character was Colonel Joshua Chamberlain from Maine, who was fighting for the Union. Gods and Generals showed the connection between the struggles of the civil war and the freedoms Americans have today. The main purpose of this movie was to show the viewers what the motives behind the American Civil War were and why the common stereotypes of the civil war are wrong. It showed real men and real situations and many modern day people disliked it because of this. The movie begins by introducing its main characters. Robert E. Lee from Virginia is offered a position as General of the Army by the Union, but he flatly stated that his first love was God and his second love was his state and that he would not take the position. Lee was portrayed as a state’s rights patriot and as an inspirational leader of men. The biggest main character was Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson, who was called up from being an instructor at the Virginia Military Institute to lead his cadets and fellow Virginians in the war. His deeply religious background was shown throughout the movie by his open prayers and his knowledge of the Bible.
