There was silence in the tent. My eyes roamed around the circle of teenagers over the five cards I clutched protectively to myself. My friend Martin sighed and put down his cards. “A pair,” he muttered. All eyes turned to Cathy. She also put down her cards, but triumphantly. “I got 2 pairs! Beat that!” I graced the room with a sardonic grin. “2 pairs. Very good. But not quite good enough.” I slammed my cards down on the ground. “1 three, ladies and gentlemen.” I reached for the pile of matchsticks in the middle gleefully. A massive hand engulfed mine before I could reach the much-coveted pile. It was Eric Sullamon, otherwise known as the Poker Demon. He laid his cards gently down on the floor. It was a full house. I groaned as the tent erupted into laughter. I hadn’t won a single game the whole week and the one time I managed to get something good someone had to get better. I stood up angrily. “Come on guys, let’s do something else. This is getting boring.” Alan sniggered from his corner. “The only thing boring around here is how you keep losing the same way!” I smiled sarcastically at him. “Oh very witty Alan, very witty indeed. Seriously, come on! Why don’t we do something?” Martin’s dad came in and smiled at us. “Come Martin. You’re coming on a walk with me. Hurry up and get your shoes on. Anybody else want to come?” I jumped at my chance. “Sure! I’ll come. What about you guys?” Sarah laughed. “I’d love to, really, but I’ve got more important things to do like sorting my socks into alphabetical order.” I bestowed upon her one of my famous “I-guess-it’s-a-private-joke” blank looks that always seemed to have the effect of making you feel like the comment you had made just a moment ago and had thought was incredibly clever was actually rather pointless, and has just caused a drastic increase in lack of attraction emanating from your general vicinity.
