Interdependent relationship George and Lennie share
George and Lennie, the main characters in the :Of Mice and Men;, have an unusual relationship compare with the ranchers who work at the ranch in the story. Obviously, their special relationship can be classified as an interdependent relationship, which means they both need each other for the particular reasons. It・s obvious that Lennie depends on and goes along with George because George took the responsibility to take care of Lennie when Lennie・s aunt Clara died. It is noticeable that Lennie is partially mentally retarded by looking at his strange behaviour as an adult. After George got the pup Lennie tried hide it from George, Slim said, :He・s jes・ like a kid, ain・t he.; and George replied, :Sure he・s jes・ like a kid. There ain・t no more harm in him than a kid neither, except he・s so strong. I bet he won・t come in here to sleep tonight. He・d sleep right alongside that box in the barn. Well---let .im. He ain・t doin・ no harm out there.; From the point of view of Lennie, George is his leader and idol, so he obeys George such as being silent when they met the boss and hiding in the brush till he comes if he does something wrong. Even when he killed Curley・s wife, he still remembered to do what he was told.
