Curituba- a sustainable city Curituba is the capital city of the Brazilian State of Parana has often been cited as a model for other LEDC cities to follow when pursuing policies, which are considered to be sustainable. In many ways Curituba is typical of LEDC cities Pop growth has been extremely rapid, from 300 000 in 1950 to 2.1 million in 1990. The growth is largely as a result of rural urban migration encouraged by the industrialisation of Curituba. The mayor of the city introduced a range of policies, which promoted urban sustainability. The heart of Curituba’s urban sustainability is a master plan, which intervened directly in urban development and aimed to improve the quality of life for all citizens.
