Show how genre and narrative are established in the opening five minutes of two films
Show how genre and narrative are established in the opening five minutes of two films The narrative of a film is how the sequence of events are organized to form a story with a particular structure. Genre is the category in which the film belongs. This can be defined by what the audience expect from the film. For example the use of a typical storyline, typical characters, typical facial expressions, typical dress, typical props, typical lighting, typical settings, typical camera angle, genre associated actors and actresses, and both typical diegetic sound and non-diegetic sound. In films codes and conventions are used to create expectations in media. When the codes are broken the film draws our attention to itself his makes an impression on the audience and makes the audience remember it. For example in a science fiction film the audience would expect to see aliens, good/bad people/aliens, the audience would expect it to be set in the future and in space, the audience would expect very dark or very bright lighting, the audience would expect people to wear either silver, futuristic or rag like clothes, and the audience would expect them to have futuristic props, gadgets, and vehicles. Generic films are popular because they create enigma codes, which are twists in the plot, that draw the audience in, making the audience want to watch on. The different genres make the audience feel safe because the audience know the general outcome of that type of film (for example good always prevails). Generic films must be ever changing to keep the audience interested, because if they were not most films would have the same or identical plots. At the beginning of a film narrative and genre must be establish very early on so that the audience want to watch on, the setting, characters, time, general plot, and enigma codes are introduced in order to captivate the audience and give the audience the general idea of what the film is about, making the audience want to watch on. In the film `Robin Hood Prince of Thieves' (hereby after referred to as `Robin Hood') the audience expect to see stereotypical characters including Robin Hood, little John, Maid Marion, and the Sheriff of Nottingham.
