Grant Wiggins matures through the experience of a death in the novel A Lesson before Dying by Ernest J. Gaines. He grows from a confused person to a strong man as he learns to see others more clearly and to cope with his heavy responsibilities. The first time Grant went to visit Jefferson in prison he had to be searched. A young deputy by the name of Paul searched him. Paul had an unpleasant look on his face as he went through Grants clothes and the food he was bringing Jefferson.
