2.) Discuss at least two authors whose work reflects changing cultures or cultural tensions The short stories entitled “Daisy Miller: A Study,” by Henry James, and “Mrs. Spring Fragrance, by Sui Sin Far both depict changing cultures around the turn of the 20th century. There were many authors who wrote work in relation to a clash in cultures around this time mostly because of the immigration from foreign countries. As more immigrants came to the United States, more conflict arose with adjusting to American beliefs, customs and values. Many wanted to stay attached to their country of origin’s traditions but found a divergent clash when trying to do so. This is exactly the case in Far’s “Mrs. Spring Fragrance.” However it is an American adjusting, or not adjusting to the European culture that is the conflict in “Daisy Miller.” Inscribed inside and around the many themes of “Daisy Miller: A Study,” are the colliding differences in the European and American cultures.
