A Layman’s Guide to Sanctification is a short novel that clearly expresses and backs up many ideas and questions one might have about God’s love and sanctification. By using the basis of theology, Dr. Dunning is able to put into simple words what sanctification is, how it can be reached, and what the purpose of sanctification is. Dr. Dunning’s guide to Sanctification helps the typical young adult, or college student, answer many questions that may run threw his or her mind throughout their adolescent lives about sanctification and God’s love. Many teenagers and college students may often have many questions run through their mind about “who exactly is God and what does it mean to truly love God?” or “what is theology?” Students often ask them self such questions many times before completely understanding the questions they ponder about. Dr. Dunning helps entirely clear up any question that a person may have a concerning God’s love, sanctification, or theology. A Layman’s Guide to Sanctification is written with the basics and works it way up. Dr. Dunning begins his short novel by starting with the definitions of sanctification. Many people do not know a thing about sanctification or theology. One must realize that sanctification is completely different from entire sanctification (16). To help a person whom might be confused about sanctification, Dunning insists on tying in scripture to reality. Dr. Dunning quotes in his introduction, “Sanctification is used in several ways, both in theology and in the Bible” (17). In order to follow sanctification and theology, one must understand the definitions of the words he or she is trying to figure out. One must not take each and every word literally. People should ask themselves, “what does it literally mean to use this term in the specific context?” before jumping to conclusions. Dr. Dunning concludes the one might be able to define words more clearly in either a Bible dictionary or a dictionary of theology, but puts most of his emphasis on tracing words and definitions through scripture. I believe that people often jump to conclusions about various sayings before thoroughly understanding what is being stated. Dunning has a superb point in tying in scripture with in irrelevant thought that a person may think. The old and new testaments, although different in ways of defining sanctification can be tied together to make perfect sense. In thought, Dunning finds ways to tie together scripture and definitions for even the most Bible illiterate person to understand the true meaning of sanctification. I, personally, did not understand anything about sanctification before reading and writing about Dr. Dunning’s novel. I believe, that in itself is pretty amazing. By separating sanctification in the Old and New Testaments, Dr. Dunning was able to define his definition of sanctification with thorough facts and scripture. Dunning puts emphasis scripture in the Book of Leviticus to portray evidence as to why he thinks Leviticus is “the most extended discussion of holiness” (23). The main point, or scripture of Leviticus is (according to Dunning) “Be ye holy for I am holy” (11:44-45: 19:2 20:26).
