Courage, the mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty. Without courage, the epic poem, Beowulf, wouldn’t mean nearly as much to the reader as it does with the element of courage. The story Beowulf is the first written story, it had been told orally for many generations before it was ever written down. Beowulf was set in early civilization similar to the time of chivalry in European countries. Courage allows us to set aside our fears and strive to achieve our goals, whatever they may be. Courage allows otherwise normal people to perform great, heroic deeds that could be used to benefit society and to help others. That is what a hero is supposed to do, right?
