The word “baptize” simply means to apply water. Yet, Lutherans believe so much more than just applying water is involved in a baptism. Lutherans believe that baptism is a holy sacrament which means it is a sacred act instituted by God, with visible means and His word, and leads to the forgiveness of sins. Christ Jesus is the only one who earned the right through his death to forgive sinners in Holy Baptism as it is written in God’s word. The reason that it is not only water but a saving grace from God is because it is applied “in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit”, so therefore it is joined to His word. Christ, himself on earth, instituted baptism and called all to give and receive its wondrous gifts.
