John Dewey John Dewey was born in Burlington, Vermont, on October 20, 1859. He attended the University of Vermont and Johns Hopkins University. In 1884 he worked as an instructor in philosophy and psychology at the University of Michigan. From 1894 to 1904 he headed the department of philosophy, psychology, and education at the University of Chicago. In 1904 Dewey moved to Columbia University in New York City in the position of professor of philosophy. He remained there for the rest of his teaching career. Dewey was one of the most notable American philosophers of the 20th century.
