Ladies and the Beasts
Ladies and the Beasts As we were on our way to the field, we had our pump up CD in the bus. Everyone was singing and laughing. We were about to play one of the biggest games of our lives. It was the championship game for the national high school rugby tournament in Kansas City, Missouri. As we pulled up to the field we started to think about what we were there to do and got serious about the game. The clouds were beginning to roll in and cover the sun to give us the perfect weather. To the west of the field there was a river; surrounded by huge trees and bushes. Most of the grass was soggy but the field was dry. We swarmed off the bus, excited and pumped up for the game, knowing what we needed to do. Once we were out of the bus, we started putting on our socks and shoes. Our good luck charms were ladybugs and dragonflies. We saw both before our game; everything was perfect. We had already played two games the previous day so we were very sore; it felt like we’d been trampled by a herd of elephants. We wanted to win and we were willing to do anything possible to make it happen. As we took to the field to begin playing, we saw our opponents; they were beasts. They were four times the size of our entire team; they were humungous. We had a small sized team anyway so now that we saw how big they really were, we felt like David versus Goliath. They were of Samoan descent and one of their traditions is to do a Haka, a war dance, before they play a game.
