Rent control has been in force in a number of major American cities for many decades. The best-known example is New York City. But this policy, meant to assist poorer residents, harms far more citizens than it helps, benefits the better off, and limits the freedom of all citizens. Rent control not only harms the landlords and tenants, it also has negative effects on the safety of communities, and appearance of the house and its maintenance. It’s amazing how rent control and decontrol affects harms tenants and landlords at the same time.
