During the Depression, many families experienced adversity throughout their travels to California. In the novel The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck, the Joads were just one of the many American families who traveled to California in search of hope and a better life. However, almost all of these families experienced hardship along the way. Death was a common plague to these traveling to the West. Although these families were in search of hope they were forced to endure horrific treatment from many people. These hardships resulted in very poor lifestyles and endless suffering for innocent people. Families like the Joads were mainly in search of hope because there was no trust left in their farms. “This country ain’t no good, but it’s my country. No, you all go ahead. I’ll jus’ stay right here where I b’long” (143). This is Grandpa’s quote, taken when he decided that he didn’t want to leave. He was unable to leave the place where he had invested so much of his life.
