Obesity in America is becoming a problem of epidemic proportion. It is clear that steps must be taken now to combat this condition or the consequences will be great. Good nutrition and exercise can and should be the steps of choice. "As obesity rates continue to grow at epidemic proportions in this country, the net effect will be dramatic increases in related chronic health conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease," says Dr. Jeffrey Koplan, M.D., director of the CDC Recent CDC reports indicate that diabetes increased by 33 percent among American adults during the 1990s, reflecting a surge in obesity during the same period. Using the 85th percentile for body mass index, experts report that 22% of children and adolescents are obese. Childhood obesity is a significant cause for concern: more children are being diagnosed with adult conditions associated with obesity, such as sleep apnea, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol. In addition, approximately 25-50% of obese children become obese adults. Finally, the social aspects of obesity can be devastating for a child; they include being made fun of, not being able to participate in sports, and not being invited to parties.
