In a time of chaos and unruliness, Pericles was able to bring order to The Empire of Athens and still be favored by the people. One can say that the attributes and actions of Pericles made him a great political leader. To being with, Pericles had been training to be a politician ever since he was a youth. Being brought up under the guidance of several philosophers, Pericles was able to learn the many aspects of being a good public speaker including having great character. The philosopher Zeno had taught him the art of silencing opponents in an argument; no matter what side he takes. This art of using the tongue as a weapon had proved useful in many debates that Pericles participated in the future.
