An early morning fire ripped through the rear of a south Charlotte church Wednesday, collapsing a roof and causing at least $500,000 in damage. About a dozen firefighters were in or near a church classroom about 4:30 a.m. when the roof collapsed. They escaped injury when the incident commander activated a three-tone warning on the firefighters' radios, a universal signal calling for an immediate evacuation. "We're devastated about the church," said the Rev. Frank Hunter, pastor of Big Pineville AME Zion Church. "But we're relieved that no one was hurt." Funerals scheduled this week have already been moved to other churches. Hunter said church officials would decide by today where they would hold Sunday's worship service.
