Title: New Research Dispels Popular Myth That A Bully’s Words Will Never Hurt You. Date: April 17 2003 Source: University Of Warwick Webpage: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2003/04/030417080610.htm This article reveals that verbal abuse has a much greater impact on the victims’ self-worth than physical attacks. In school settings it was discovered that name-calling can significantly reduce self-esteem. Dr. Stephen Joseph, a psychologist at the University of Warwick, did the research on what name-calling does to a child’s self esteem. The study assessed 331 school students in England and showed that about 40 percent were bullied some time in their schooling. Bullied children may suffer from a posttraumatic stress, so really instead of toughening up the student bullying affects their mental health. The article mentions that bullying is stressful and can affect adolescents both emotionally and physically. It also talks about how verbal bullying can lead victims to feeling helpless and that they lack control over their own feeling and actions. They think that the power and control is all in the bully but not in themselves, that can lead to posttraumatic stress or lower self worth. This article linked earlier days on the playground being bullied to outcomes later in life. Being bullied affects everyone a little differently but the most common result of verbal abuse is the lacking of self-esteem.
