change and changing self
Good Morning Ladies and Gentleman. I am the curator of this exhibition and today I will bring you a greater understanding of changing self. Change is the transition of one thing to another. With that in mind, changing self to me means when a person changes who they are. I chose my two texts as they portray two different types of change. Sky High deals with changing with age and how with age our perceptions of things change whereas Beauty and the Beast explores how people can bring about changes in your personality and appearance. Specifically Sky High shows an aspect of life from the perspective of a middle aged woman. The woman using the now ‘age warped washing line’ feels the pilot light burning’ to experience what she did as a child, to go ‘flying.’ The story recreates the experience from the child’s point of view in precise detail. At the end of the story the woman realizes she can no longer be the child she once was and can no longer fly as ‘there are too many things tying her to the ground.’ Within this short story, change is mapped out by the clothesline. Roberts shows the change occurring by creating contrasts between her life as a child and then as an adult.
