ERODE OCT. 8. Bedsheets production has been hit by closure since yesterday of about 3,000 powerlooms in the Chennaimalai area in Perundurai taluk, following a hike in yarn prices. Weavers numbering 5,000-8,000 have been rendered jobless. Of more than 10,000 powerlooms engaged in production of export variety bed sheets and providing jobs to 25,000 weavers, the owners have closed 30 per cent of the units. V. N. Saminathan, president, Chennimalai Powerloom Textile Producers Association, said yarn (10 number count), which was sold at Rs. 250 a bundle of five kg in 2002, was now quoted at Rs. 360. The price rose `suddenly' from Rs. 335 last month. Similarly, the price of the 2/17 variety increased ``steeply'' and was now selling at Rs. 525 and that of other coarse varieties also went up considerably. So, Mr. Saminathan said, the owners could not invest huge money in yarn.
