The destruction of Oedipus was caused by a number of factors, including the workings of fate and the decisions made by Oedipus throughout his lifetime. No single factor can be deemed as the sole cause of the tragic downfall of one of this prominent hero. It can be argued that it was Oedipus’s duty as King that brought about this descent. The events that led to him becoming the King of Thebes were life decisions that steered him to destruction.
