Patient care during and operation requires that the surgeon be assisted by two vital aids; the Registered Nurse and the Surgical Technician must work together as a team despite their opposing jobs. They each care for the patient before, during, and after the surgery. Both positions are so crucial that one mistake could result in the death of a patient. Before the start of the case the RN and ST work together, yet independently at times to get the patient back to the room. The task of getting intra-operative medications from the pharmacy is left for the RN to complete, along with obtaining any wound dressings that may be needed at the end of the case.
