The Chosen
The novel begins with the introduction of the main character, and narrator of the book, Reuven Malter. Reuven is an orthodox, and a motherless teen living in a large, Jewish community. The other principal character of the story, is Danny Saunders, a Hasid. He lives with his father, the religious leader, or rabbi of their Hasidic Temple. They formally met at the point in time when Danny was at bat at the softball game between their yeshivas. He accidently hit the ball toward Reuven, which ended up hitting him in the eye. This left him hospitalized for a week. During this time, Danny came to the hospital to apologize, but Reuven denied his entrance, apologies, and sent him off. Though, when his father found out about the conversation he told him that he should never refuse to accept someone’s apology. From then on, when Danny would visit, a wonderful friendship developed between the two boys.
