Buchi Emecheta, Nnaife’s second wife Adaku left her husband after she discovered that life was becoming miserable for her due to her inability to bear a son. Nnaife’s responsibility as a father died completely after he spent all his money on alcohol and hardly provides food for his children. It was very hard for Nnaife to feed his family especially Adaku and her children. It became hard for Adaku when she had a quarrel with Nnu Ego, despite Nnu Ego’s fault Adaku was accused for not been respectful to a mother Nnu Ego who had boy children. Nnaife was a washerman who lost his Job after his master Dr Meers went back to England. Adaku shared a room with both Nnu Ego and her husband Nnaife. She was forced to live with a man who could not afford to feed even his family.
