Jefferson’s First Inaugural Address When elected President in 1801, Thomas Jefferson gave his inaugural address explaining his responsibilities as President and what was expected of him. He acknowledged the fact that no country is run solely by one person. Jefferson’s speech was an important one in that he tried to unite the country. He knew that the Federalists did not support him. Through this oration, Jefferson explains the steps a new country must go through in order to progress. He gave an insight into the struggles associated with interpreting the laws in which our country should be governed. Jefferson shows us his desire for fairness to all. He wanted the people of he new nation to cooperate to make the United States strong. The United States was a relatively new country and there were different opinions as to how the nation should be governed. Jefferson, rightly so, knew that he needed the support of the entire population to make the government strong so that it would endure. During this period of time, there were very strong opinions as to how the government should be run.
