Many scientists and historians believe that in the very beginning of human existence humans did not use language as a form of communication. Instead, it’s believed that they used other forms of communication such as sign language, signs, symbols, and pictograms (Estelic, 1993, p. 256). These scientist also believe that it wasn’t until about 35,000 years ago that verbal language became our primary method of communication with each other, and about 5,000 years ago that written language was created. This semester in our Introduction to Communications class we’ve learned about different forms of communication such as interpersonal, public, group, intercultural, organizational, and mass communication. It’s very important that we study communication because of a good point that the authors of our textbook Communication Contexts raise in the first chapter when they say: “Communication is more complex than People think. Common sense is not enough to be successfully skilled.
