Have you ever experienced a course of events that you dreaded at first but it turned out life altering? I took a trip of epic proportions the summer after my junior year of high school. I went with ten fellow students and a teacher. I dreaded even the thought of being outdoors with a bunch of people I, at the time; felt I had no connection to. The day was July 10, 1998; I was so afraid to leave I was hiding from all outside contact. The bus was outside waiting and the phone would not stop ringing. Realizing there was no way out, I answered the phone to hear my mother’s voice. Her tone, as I could have already guessed, was not a happy one. To my surprise, it was not a sound of anger but of disappointment. Out of pure guilt I grabbed my bags and walked out the door to get on the bus. On the bus ride to H.D. Jacobs High School I remember the intense anxiety I felt. As the bus pulled up to the school I could see my fellow travelers waiting for the van to arrive. After some conversing between students, the van arrived for the long haul. On the van ride, I remember being more comfortable on the floor opposed to the cramped seat. I often lay on the floor for a nap throughout the ride there. The six travelers and I stopped in a town named Eau Claire in Wisconsin to camp out for the night and give ourselves a break from the crowded van. That night a couple of fellow students had a heartfelt conversation around the campfire that became quite emotional I do not recall what was said but there were strong cultural differences between two students, no anger, only emotion. The next morning we took off to Minnesota. After about 4 or 5 grueling hours we finally got to our destination, I can’t remember the name of the town but I do know it was on the northern tip of Minnesota. While setting up camp, the thoughts in my head were only dread of the nights to come. I knew that I would not have the benefit of the facilities provided here, however what was to come would be more ambiguous than I could have imagined. The next morning after a hearty breakfast we were instructed to get ready for our 45 mile hike. Not only did we have to hike 45 miles up the mountains, but we had to do it while carrying 75 pound backpacks. We stopped for a couple of breaks along the way but by the end of the day we had covered approximately 10 miles. That night seemed to drag on probably because I was not yet accustomed to a situation such as that. The next morning finally arrived. Breakfast was served and then we were off with our 75 lb packs on our backs.
