The campus of the University of South Alabama is home to many different buildings. Each building is unique in its own way and also serves a specific purpose. These buildings house the facilities that make learning at the University of South Alabama possible. There is one building, however, that stands out. This building is dedicated to serving the arts of music and theatre. The Laidlaw Performing Arts Center more than meets the needs of a college level performing arts center. When one thinks of a performing arts center, certain expectations come to mind. A proper performing arts center should contain facilities for both music and dramatic arts. These facilities should house the three major criteria of any performing arts center. These criteria consist of a rehearsal hall, Instructional classrooms, and a performance venue. Aside from these criteria, a performing arts center should also be aesthetically pleasing. The Laidlaw Performing Arts Center is one of the newer buildings on the University of South Alabama campus. Therefore, the decor is more modern and elaborate than other campus buildings. The main entry hall of the Laidlaw Performing Arts Center features beautiful marble flooring and very high ceilings. There is a large chandelier suspended from the ceiling, as well as four elaborate lamps protruding from the wall.
