What is real presence?
Lucy Hackney TRS 236: Sacraments Patrick Hayes October 2, 2003 What does “real presence” mean? When Catholics talk about the presence of Jesus in the wine and bread there are many viewpoints. Some may say that Jesus is not really transformed from the bread and wine, but is a symbol of Jesus. They also say that the substance of the wine and bread do not change, but they are a “sign of a sacred reality.” Berenger of Tours first brought up this theory on Eucharist and he used the Augustine definition of a sacrament. Many of those that believe that Eucharist is only a symbol rely on their senses to guide them through life.
