Even though he gets insulted by some ignorant drunkard, he doesn’t get affected by this and continues reading his papers. I think this shows that Hamid is getting use to the way many British people behave. Not saying that all British are like that, but Hamids store is placed where “the streets around were not respectable.” Here there were all the neglected children, all the young boys reading porn, and people without any really future, drunkards! It is obvious that this is the meeting of two very different countries. Hamid is from a land and culture where you respect other people. You don’t encumber other people with your rude and racists opinions. “If you can’t say anything positive about another person, then don’t say anything!” You can also see that Hamid is from a culture where you respect the women. As it is said in the text: “But he never offended his wife Sharine by describing to her this flotsam and jetsam.”(P.3, l.25) When Hamid came to the country he respected the land and the people, but as time went by, this changed a lot.
