Failed Recreation Hemingway's short story is done an injustice by the recreation of it as a movie. The story and the movie have very little in common, other than they very basic plot. The Main two characters have change in personality and in gender roles with respect to the times. Also the director took the liberty of altering the story line on several occasions. The American is very masculine and dominant in the short story, but in the movie he seems to take a back seat to the girl.
