“The Achievement of Desire” by Richard Rodriguez is an autobiography about self-identity, culture and self-development. Rodriguez, having grown up with both of his parents who were strong believers in their Hispanic culture, made it difficult to support his willingness to learn and to be like his teachers. The result of this was him being ostracized from his family and home life. In the essay he wrote, Rodriguez recalls that the academic success he achieved thus far in his life was due to the fact that he worked so hard, even if that meant letting go and keeping himself from his family.
