JOSE CLEMENTE OROZCO 1883 - 1949 All artists have used their talent as a way to express themselves and to express the problems in society. José Clemente Orozco is one such artist who’s provocative and dynamic murals have expressed the oppression people went through. His art and style have captured the feelings and drama in the tragedy of social oppression and governmental dictatorship. Orozco was born in a time when revolution and social injustice was standard. He was born in the town of Zapotlan el Grande, present day Ciudad Guzman, on November 23, 1883 to Orozco Vázquez and María Rosa Flores Navarro. His family moved around before settling in Mexico City in 1890. There Orozco was inspired to become an artist when he was introduced to the work of Jose Guadalupe Posada, who later became his mentor. After seeing Posada’s work Orozco wished to take up art as a profession. Soon after he enrolled in the San Carlos Academy he left discouraged at his potential to become a professional artist. He returned later after studying agriculture for three years to study at the Academy.
