Roberts Latosha Roberts Professor Velten English 1301.001 18 September 2003 Generation Crisis In today’s society children and teenagers are not always understood. Sometimes they make decisions that adults do not understand. For example the cloths they wear, the way they talk, and even the way they handle certain situations. This can make communication between parent and child difficult. Often adults are not able to understand the reasons behind their child’s actions and do not have the patients to try to understand. Parents only want what they feel is best for their children, they want them to have a better life. This is why a good parent/child relationship is very important. Both sides need to be able to communicate their thoughts, and have the respect for the each other to where they do not offend, upset, or hurt the other party. This would allow for each side to be able to accept the other party’s decisions even though they may not agree with the decision. This type of parent/child relationship is evident in the story Bricklayer’s Boy by Alfred Lubrano. The child and the father in this story have a very strong and understanding relationship and they respect each other very much. The father is a blue collar, middle class bricklayer. He works very hard long days to provide for his family Roberts and pay his sons way thru college. He always told his son that he wanted him to go to college, get a good education and become a lawyer or doctor. There were two blue collar rules: 1) make as much money as you can to pay for as good a life as you can get.
