Leadership Interview - Joe Derry (former summer camp director) 1. What is your leadership philosophy? Never ask and employee to do something that I myself wouldn’t do. I feel as thought this is a great philosophy. This can greatly increase your creditability as a leader. It is a very cut and dry concept. If you ask someone to do a job and they refuse to do it and you end up doing it yourself you are going to gain a lot of respect from the people that you are leading. With this concept I believe you have to be very cautious. If you constantly find yourself dong jobs because people aren’t performing them right or refuse to do them then you need to re-evaluation this concept a little bit. 2. What was your most successful tool of motivating workers and co-workers? I am firm believer that actions speak louder than words. So mostly that was my means of motivation. Of course there is always a need to speak up and talk to someone to light a fire underneath them. I think Joe is right that actions speak louder than words. However I think this concept would only work on a sports team or in a situation where someone maybe isn’t the boss. A person can be a leader on a team without speaking. However it isn’t possible for a manger of a company to let his actions speak louder than his words. Motivating at the most levels other that sports has a lot to do with communication. 3. What is your vision as a leader? To make sure that all my workers are satisfied and to make sure that they know I have an open door policy. I think that is a great vision because with an open door policy you are going to be able to keep your workers happy for the most part because they can come to you with anything.
