The short story is a very old literary form. Its origins can be traced back to the Old Testament stories with all the parables, fables, and whatnot. However, the short story dates back to about the last half of the nineteenth century with practitioners like Poe, Hawthorne, and Chekhov. The short story is concerned with a single effect and often focuses on one character or even episode. It deals with a single moment of crisis or conflict in which some truth is revealed.
