Charles Robert Darwin was born in Shrewsbury, England, on February 12 1809. His grandfather, Erasmus Darwin, was a physician, scientist, and poet who had written several works with an evolutionary theme. Darwin’s mother died when he was eight, so his older sister helped raising him. After being tutored at home, he attended a small private school in his hometown. As a hobby, Charles collected insects, minerals, and plant specimens on the grounds of his family’s manor. Darwin’s father, a successful doctor, in 1825 Charles to Edinburgh University to study medicine. Darwin realized that he was not suited for a medical career.
