In the novel One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Ken Kesey, certainly depicts McMurphy as a hero. Upon his arrival, McMurphy brings laughter, gambling, profanity to the insane asylum. His confidence and fearlessness to talk back and disobey the staff portrays him as hero among the patients. His actions clearly have a positive affect on the patients throughout the novel. Ken Kesey, clearly demonstrates how McMurphy displays leadership qualities, confidence and influences those around him. McMurphy’s actions show confidence that encourages other patients to show signs of bravery as well. He is continuously standing up to the Big Nurse and her staff. Mc. Murphy refused to be controlled by the nurse or her black boys. One example is when McMurphy wanted to change the schedule so it would be possible that he watch the World Series on the television. “The rest of the guys are watching too, but they still got their eyes on nothing but the black TV in front of us, but anyone can see that their all sneaking looks at the Big Nurse.” (129) The Big Nurse would not allow him to watch, so Mc Murphy sat and watched a black screen.
